The BRC Global Standards are a suite of four industry-leading technical standards that specify requirements to be met by an organisation to enable the production, packaging, storage and distribution of safe food and consumer products. Originally developed in response to the needs of UK members of the British Retail Consortium, the Standards have gained usage worldwide and are specified by growing numbers of retailers and branded manufacturers in the EU, North America and further afield. Certification to a global standard, which is achieved through an audit by a third party certification body, reassures retailers and branded manufacturers of the capability and competence of the supplier and reduces the need for retailers and manufacturers to carry out their own audits thereby reducing the administrative burden on both the supplier and the customer. From the beginning the FEMAS feed materials scheme has been based on HACCP principles, an internationally recognised system of hazard analysis pioneered by space agency NASA. Over recent years HACCP has become a central requirement of Food and Feed safety legislation. The scheme is audited and certified by an independent certification body, in accordance with the internationally recognised standard EN45011. This means that the certification body is itself independently assessed every year to ensure that the standard is implemented and administered consistently and fairly. The scheme dovetails with UFAS and with the UK livestock assurance (Little Red Tractor) schemes which the major supermarkets make a requirement for the home-produced livestock products they buy. FEMAS participants are an extremely diverse group of companies, ranging from specialist additive manufacturers, to food processors and brewers.
